A „status quo” a mentális könyveléshez hasonlóan (lásd az április 24-i bejegyzést) egy olyan döntési mechanizmus/hiba megnevezése, melynek felismerésével átgondoltabb döntéseket hozhatunk (nem csak) a pénzügyek terén.

A „status quo” latin kifejezés, jelentése „fennálló helyzet”. A megnevezés esetünkben azt a szituációt jelöli, mikor a döntéseik során az emberek a helyzetük változatlanságára törekszenek még akkor is, ha az nem az optimális választás a számunkra. Másképp fogalmazva „ha nem merül fel nyilvánvaló probléma, akkor az emberek nem is keresik a lehetőségeket, megelégednek a jelenlegi helyzetükkel, és nem hajlandóak tenni a változásért annak ellenére, hogy jobb helyzetbe tudnának kerülni”.
